Jo’burg MMC Offers Moral Support to UJ Community Engagement

The City of Johannesburg’s MMC of Development Planning, Funzela Ngobeni, paid an early visit to UJ’s Community Engagement (UJCE) team at DFC on Saturday before the student volunteers left for an inner-city clean-up project.

“I really want to thank the MMC and the Regional Director for their visit to us personally and thanking us for our commitment and for appreciating our volunteers and the work we are doing on a voluntary basis,” said UJ’s Community Engagement Specialist, Andy Balaram.

“I also want to thank the City of Johannesburg for affording the UJ Community Engagement to work with the various sectors of the MMC’s office,” he added.

Ngobeni’s visit served as an act of encouragement to student volunteers who work to promote the environmental well-being and maintenance of the inner-city region of Johannesburg. Ngobeni referred to their collective effort as a pillar of strength for the Executive Mayor’s office.

Ngobeni was accompanied by the Executive Mayor’s office Regional Director, Irene Mfune. She gave recognition to the work that UJCE does to assist in cleaning the City and its surrounding areas.

The MMC also wished the students good luck for their upcoming exams. Ngobeni also emphasised the City of Johannesburg’s appreciation for UJCE’s assistance.

The project, which began at 08:30 and ended at 12:00, formed part of the ‘A Re Sebetseng’ (‘let’s work’) initiative. ‘A Re Sebetseng’ is a monthly volunteer clean-up campaign facilitated by the Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg’s Office.
