PASMA UJ Marches To Change the Status Quo at UJ

The Pan Africanist Movement of Azania (PASMA) at UJ staged a protest aimed at promoting dialogue around issues faced by black students on Friday.

The march took place at the University’s Auckland Park Kingsway campus. The central theme of the demonstration was the ‘rejection of living under nervous conditions in the University’.

“As students, we are afraid to express our concerns and so it is protests such as this that gives us the opportunity to voice our concerns,” said Fikile Zwane who participated in the protest action.

The list of demands compiled by the party included the accreditation and monitoring of all off-campus residences, the creation of a Pan Africanist day house as well as an effective campus health services with active sexual education programs to eradicate rape.

Some protesters were dressed in their political t-shirts, while some of the students were wearing refuse bags. “We are using these props to convey our emotions, as we feel that we are treated like trash in these ivory towers,” said Lethlogonolo Raphiri, PASMA UJ’s secretary of finance.

The turnout was lower than expected but PASMA’s chairperson, Tebogo Serala, thanked all of those who came to support the demonstration. Serala said that the organization hoped that their efforts do not go in vain.
